Gerro and Lamps To Miss Out
December 9th 2008 08:59
Former England and Socceroos coach Terry Venebles has stated how he feels that anyone who pulls out of the England squad without a real reason should automatically miss out on the next fixture, and that includes Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. In his article for The Sun newspaper in the UK he hots up the club vs country row by blaming the clubs for pressuring players to pull out. "It is not an easy situation for the players. There is no doubt that they all want to play for their country. But they are being squeezed by their clubs and find themselves in an almost impossible situation." he also questioned whether Lampard and Gerrard should be automatic selections for the next game.
"What really pleased me about the Germany game was the performances of guys like Stuart Downing, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Matthew Upson, Michael Carrick and Gabby Agbonlahor.
These are mostly players who have been on the fringes of the squad for a few years without really convincing themselves or the general public. But the way they played the other night has dispelled those doubts. Now we know what they are capable of, that they can be trusted to deliver. Watching Carrick and Gareth Barry working so well together in central midfield, are Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard still automatic first choices?"
