A-League Cup

There is no doubt that football in Australia is on the rise. The Socceroos are winning even when they perform badly and with Adelaide performing so well in the Asian Champions League people are starting to sit up and take notice of the A-League. With the league looking to expend to ten teams in the near future the higher archy are looking for something else that will grab the publics attention. This has led to a lot of talk about promotion and relegation to and from the current state leagues. While I think that this would be an excellent idea some where in the future I also think it is a case trying to run before you can walk.
I feel the next logical step is to set up a knockout cup competition that would include the top state teams as well as the A-league outfits. This would give A-league teams who are out of the running for the playoffs something else to play for. It would also give the state teams some big pay days, allowing them to attract better players and prepare them for a future where promotion to the A-league could be a possibility. It will also mean that young A-league talent can go on loan to state teams still with the chance of show casing their talents on the big stage.
For me it is all positives, but I am sure there are many that will disagree.
