Will Barcelona Really Stop Arsenal?

February 22nd 2011 11:33
: Sport Wonders
Welcome all our expectations were dashed a fourth night ago when Arsenal beat Barca. But the only way I see Barcelona coming back into the competition is as follows; Read on...

barcelona arsenal
Barca Celebrate thier goal agiant Arsenal.

In truth, there's only one way Barca can defeat Arsenal, and that's because there's only one way Barca play: possession, attacking football. Pep Guardiola does not change his approach, playing system, formation, or tactics for any opponent. What he does change, though, is his specific instructions to his superstars during the game. More of a conductor than a coach, Guardiola will bark orders to his players from the touchline to accommodate Arsenal's minute-by-minute strategy

* Arsenal will be deprived of the ball, of that there is no doubt even before the two teams head for the tactical drawing board. But while Barca are sometimes too reluctant to play route-one football, Arsene Wenger's men have no problems adopting that approach, as evidenced by the fact that they scored two of their three goals against the Catalans over two legs last season through speedy counter-attacks.

Arsenal are not the most physical side in the Premier League, but almost any team in football today is more physical than Barcelona. The Gunners can get rough and mix it up with the "big boys" if they want to, and if Wenger decides to throw a curveball and deviate from his usual one-touch football and get physical, it could be the ace card that could stun the Blaugrana.

* With in-form Samir Nasri doubtful for the clash due to injury, Arsene Wenger will rely heavily on Cesc Fabregas to provide the attacking arsenal. The captain didn't have the best of games in last season's first leg clash, although he was undoubtedly the hero of the night for the home fans when he scored from the spot - with a broken leg - to level the tie and keep his side in the fight. Cesc will be eager to impress against a team who have been trying to lure him away from the Emirates, but it's the red-hot Van Persie that Barca should be worried about. The Dutchman has scored nine goals in his last five Premier League games and with defensive stalwart Carles Puyol struggling to recover in time after injury, Barcelona's backline could be easily exposed.

* Barca could've embarrassingly routed Arsenal at the Emirates last season. But having taken a two-goal lead, the Catalans proceeded to take their foot off the gas and grow complacent, allowing speed demon Theo Walcott to spark a comeback and salvage the first leg clash in a 2-2 draw. First, a sloppy pass by Sergio Busquets, then some slack defending which prompted Carles Puyol to clatter into Cesc Fabregas inside the box, gave the Gunners a free get-out-of-jail card, albeit only temporarily in the end.

So far this season, Barca have shown no signs of easing off during a game when they are in front, spanking opponents right, left and centre with goals galore. But Saturday's surprise 1-1 draw at Sporting Gijon demonstrated that a lackadaisical approach can be costly for the Blaugrana.

Well I think Barcelona should get their acts right as I strongly feel that Arsenal is ready ready for a showdown at Camp Nou. What is your take on these, post your comments below.

Kenyan Boaz Lalang proved he is world class in Delhi
Kenyan Boaz Lalang proved he is world class in Delhi

These Commonwealth Games were a massive opportunity for three distinct groups of athletes.
Kenyan Boaz Lalang proved he is world class in Delhi
There were the favourites, many of whom came here as the new champion of Europe or Africa in their event and duly added Commonwealth gold to their collection.
Then there were those older competitors for whom this was probably one last opportunity to stand on the podium.
Well done to them, but I've been looking at the most exciting group - the new talent.
This was their chance to gain international experience, to impress and show what they might be able to do in London in two year's time.
Kenya's Boaz Lalang is just 21, but this has been his breakthrough year. He'd won world indoor silver back in March and was second behind his countryman, David Rudisha, in both of those world record breaking races at the end of August.
But here Lalang's mindset had to be different. A gold was expected, and he showed he could handle that pressure in the 800m. He's a front-runner, like Rudisha, and imposed himself in the semi and final in Delhi.
His triumph, leading home a Kenyan 1-2-3, marks him out as one of the best in the world over the two laps. He's definitely a medal contender for London and, before that, at next year's World Championships in Daegu.
Lalang is just about the finished article, but it's not just gold that's caught my eye here.
Remember all the negative headlines about how few Jamaican sprint stars were coming to Delhi? Well, some promising performers have emerged from those that did make the trip. Their 2010 national champion for 100m, Oshane Bailey, looked very good until suffering an injury in the semi-final which prevented him from lining up for the championship race.
Bailey, who only turned 21 in August, ran 10.12 seconds in the second round, just one hundredth outside the personal best he set earlier in the year, and the same time that his team-mate, Lerone Clarke, later clocked to take gold in the final.
My Indian tip for 2012 isn't one of their Delhi gold medallists. It's a 21-year-old who was leading the 800m final until the last 200m.
Australian pole vaulter Liz Parnov
Australia's Liz Parnov is one to watch in the pole vault
Tintu Luka is India's national record holder for the distance and a front-runner. That takes tremendous confidence in your ability and it didn't work out here. She faded to sixth, but lessons will have been learned, and she will come back stronger.
Also learning about competition at this level was a 16 year old Australian pole-vaulter, Liz Parnov, who'd won silver at the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore.
In Delhi, her introduction to senior competition was an 11th place finish. But the event is in her blood - her father Alex coaches the World, Olympic and now double Commonwealth champion, Steve Hooker.
Though she couldn't produce it on Tuesday night, her personal best is already 4.40m - exceptional given her age. She might be the future of her event.

Yes, many chose not to come here and others that did turn up won golds pretty easily, but keep an eye on the athletes I've mentioned. London could be their Games.

FIFA World Rankings: August 2010

September 22nd 2010 14:16
There are some big movers and shakers this month, with 30 spot jumps being made like it’s a Sunday stroll in the park and further evidence that hanging onto past glories will get you absolutely nothin’ – what have you done for me lately?
Italy and France continue their freefall to oblivion and Bolivia (no, really – they’re holding up the Top 50) and a couple of relatively recent solo acts, Slovakia and Montenegro, are shooting up the table, proving once and for all: sometimes, parting ways with old friends will help your FIFA/Coca-Cola standing. (And that’s really what it’s all about.)

Ligue 1: Jussié scores a stunner…..

September 20th 2010 10:30
Ligue 1: Jussié scores a stunner to seal Bordeaux’s 2-0 win over Lyon

The history between these two teams is a tale of two eras. Historically, Bordeaux have dominated the matchup, winning 20 and drawing 15 of the past 45 Ligue 1 matches. The more recent history tells a different story. In the past 11 matches between these two teams, Bordeaux have only won once. The 1-0 win came in Bordeaux’s title winning 2008/09 season thanks to an Alou Diarra goal. Lyon have won five times with the remaining games ending in stalemates. In recent years, the rivalry has heated up as both teams had credible rights to the Ligue 1 title. This year the tension surrounding the fixture between these two intensified even more with the transfer of Yoann Gourcuff to Lyon and the poor form by both teams in the opening weeks of Ligue 1

I am a huge soccer fan. I would have blogged more about the South African World Cup but I was extremely busy over the last month. However, I think that at least the final match deserves some attention.

In short, the Dutch played a filthy, despicable game. They were the bullies on the field who decided to win the game by beating the crap out of their opponents. With a staggering ten yellow cards – two of which (Mark van Bommel and Nigel de Jong) should have been straight red – the Dutch made a fool of themselves and almost made soccer look like American football
